MEET MARY BETH

I was born and raised in the small North Carolina community of Southern Pines, in Moore County. Both of my parents were teachers, and hearing their dinner table stories about the state of education led me to one singular conclusion: I would never be a teacher! I studied journalism and graphic design at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and moved New York City to pursue my dreams of becoming a graphic designer. However, a transformative year in the city compelled me to reassess my career path. It was then that I realized my true calling lay in teaching.

Returning to North Carolina, I embarked on an 18-year journey as a middle & high school social studies teacher in Greensboro, where I found immense fulfillment in nurturing young minds. Achieving National Board Certification marked a significant milestone in my teaching career, but it also brought to light the profound educational disparities that exist within our district. Witnessing firsthand the stark differences in resources and opportunities available to students fueled my unwavering commitment to equity in education.

Today, as a passionate advocate for educational equality, I am dedicated to ensuring that every child has access to a quality education, regardless of their background or circumstances. Guided by this mission, I actively engage in advocacy efforts, serving as a leader in education initiatives and equity-focused organizations.

My partner, formerly a teacher and now a high school counselor, shares my passion for education, as do our two children, who are proud students in Guilford County Schools. Prior to getting elected to the Board of Commissioners in 2020, I found joy coaching school soccer, swimming, and participating in Greensboro's public summer swim league. Although my schedule currently doesn't allow time for community coaching, we continue to be deeply rooted in our community.
